First Look: Toshiba Releases Wireless Mobility Server

By Matthew A. Peretz

Toshiba’s Computer Systems Group (CSG) announced the Magnia SG20 wireless mobility server.

The Magnia SG20 is a portable wireless server that can be used in various environments including small and medium-sized offices, remote offices in large organizations, home offices, and other businesses looking for mobile networking capability.

About the size of a Toshiba notebook, the Magnia SG20 can fit into an ordinary computer case. The unit is designed to interface with wireless-enabled notebooks and PDAs. The Magnia SG20 connects these mobile tools to one another for added office efficiency and automation.

The Magnia SG20 is described by Toshiba as a fully integrated wireless “network in a box,” enabling users to securely access and share files, printers, and an Internet account. By adding a wireless PC card, the Magnia SG20 connects wireless-enabled devices using Wi-Fi technology (802.11b) without the need for an external access point.

The Magnia SG20 offers other optimized server features such as Web caching, content filtering, backup, e-mail services, remote administration and a Linux operating system.

The Magnia SG20 includes functions to protect valuable data from unwanted access, with a configurable firewall protection that guards information from intrusion over the Internet. The Magnia SG20 also has a virtual private network (VPN) feature for allowing secure access to authorized users when connecting from offsite locations.

Available now, Toshiba’s Magnia SG20 wireless mobility server is available in single or dual hard disk drive configurations, currently providing up to 60GB of maximum storage capacity. Starting at $1,440, the Magnia SG20 is available direct at www.shoptoshiba.com or through Toshiba’s traditional distribution channels.
