But the desktop computing market is in a state of flux not seen before, presenting companies with an opportunity to rethink everything.
That’s because, for the first time, real alternatives abound. Along with the freshly minted Windows 7, Apple ( AAPL – news – people ) has thrust itself into the discussion with ubiquitous advertising and just plain good products. And Google ( GOOG – news – people ) wants a seat at the desktop discussion with its Chrome OS–a lightweight, Internet-focused option for netbooks and mobile devices. Currently, Chrome OS is a bit of a science project, but it could become a long-term viable computing option.
