With the free app from Apple’s App Store, you can buy credits for $1.99 an hour and use them as you need them.

“Typical Boingo Wireless use is by subscription: you give them money each month and you can then use a large number of their hotspots domestically (or globally) as you wish. The company is changing things up with a new Boingo Wi-Fi Credits app in the iTunes App Store. Now owners of iPhones, iPod touch, and the forth-coming iPad tablet can buy credits in $1.99 increments good for 60 minutes at Boingo hotspots. The app itself is free, and so is your first credit.

Purchase 10 credits for $19.99 and you get one credit hour free. You can pay for all these credits using your iTunes account. Credits are good for 12 months, and expire if unused. A full map of all Boingo hotspots is available at boingo.jiwire.com; a hotspot map is also available in the app, to show your proximity to the Wi-Fi you need.”
