Storage giant Western Digital is upping the capacity on its Passport portable USB drives to 120GB, continuing efforts by the major players in PC storage to push the technology envelope for traveling business users.
The updated drive, which WD touts as a “digital briefcase for people on the go,” relies on an internal WD Scorpio 2.5-inch IDE drive. The drive ships in a sleek-looking enclosure with a textured, non-slip rugged design.
The drive comes with the company’s Data Lifeguard backup software, and uses USB 2.0 for its PC interface, similarly to its predecessor. Also, it’s unlikely to require a power supply on most systems — making it easier to tote along on business trips.
“Simple and easy to use, WD Passport Portable USB Drives combine stylish design with one of the most rugged and reliable 2.5-inch hard drive in its class to deliver a portable USB hard drive worthy enough to be named one of the ‘Top Ten Coolest Products’ by USA Today,” said Jim Welsh, vice president and general manager of WD’s branded products group.
“With Data Lifeguard data protection, a WD Passport Portable USB Drive is dependable enough for our customers to consider it the portable file for their digital lives.”
In addition to the new 120GB capacity, the WD Passport Portable USB Drive also comes in sizes ranging from 40GB to 100GB.
The drive carries a price tag of $199, with an optional carrying case priced at $24.99.
