U-Match Mouse
Rating 89
It’s a rare company that doesn’t worry about desktop file security. Restricting access to documents and spreadsheets is a difficult task, especially if one or two people share a computer. The U-Match mouse uses proprietary BioLink Authentication System (BAS) 3.0 to limit file and application intrusions.
Encased in a sleek silver case, it glides easily on any mousepad. The Bio-Link fingerprint scanner is on the side of the mouse for easy print recognition. To start, two CDs were used to load BAS 3.0. The instructions were not too difficult and took about 30 minutes. Scanning takes only two seconds and fingerprints are stored in templates that can’t be used to regenerate fingerprint images, minimizing threats to private files.
One of the more useful features is the security blocking option. The biometric protocol can be used on any file or application on a network to limit desktop access to authorized users only. The Windows LogOn and ScreenSaver protection allows biometric one-touch access to designated documents. BioVault is a digital safe designed to protect files on a hard disk.
Overall, this is a product category to watch. If set up correctly almost every document that is earmarked with the biometric protocol can limit access to any user unless he or she has the correct fingerprint identification. IT managers will especially appreciate this for folders and applications that client users may stumble into accidentally. However, it is a somewhat confusing process to follow on the CDs and some of the prompts for setting up file security may mystify a less-experienced user. But once it’s up and running, there is no mistaking its value.
