Dell Debuts Color LED, Laser Printers, Multifunctions

Unwrapping what it calls the world’s smallest A4/letter color laser class printer, Dell today bolstered its desktop and workgroup lines of color single- and multifunction printers.

The phrase “laser class” is a clue that the Dell 1250c and 1350cnw printers and 1355cnw printer/copier/scanner/fax use an LED instead of the familiar laser light source to fuse toner onto a drum for printing. Dell says its 600 by 600 dpi LED engine produces top-quality output faster while consuming less electricity than rival entry-level color lasers and has a maximum monthly duty cycle of 30,000 pages.

Measuring just 15.5 by 11.8 by 8.9 inches, the 1250c ($229) prints up to 12 black or 10 color pages per minute. The host-based printer has a USB 2.0 interface, a 150-sheet input tray, and a drum and fuser unit rated for the life of the printer, leaving just black, cyan, magenta, and yellow toner cartridges as consumables.

The 1350cnw ($329) steps up to 15 black and 12 color ppm as well as adding both Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet interfaces for small-office sharing. Its four-in-one sibling the 1355cnw, available for order November 16 (the other printers in today’s announcement are available immediately), is $449 with Ethernet and Wi-Fi.

For bigger workgroups — eight or more users, Dell suggests — the new 2150cn ($349) and duplex 2150cdn ($399) network color laser printers deliver up to 24 color and mono ppm and a monthly duty cycle of 40,000 pages. A 250-sheet input tray is standard with a second tray optional.

Available high-yield toner cartridges (2,500 pages color, 6,000 pages black) help pare costs per page to 2.4 cents for black and 14.3 cents for color. The multifunction versions, the 2155cn and 2155cdn, are $549 and $649, respectively.
