Building on the past success and reliability of its Phaser 4500 monochrome laser printer, Xerox today announced the next generation, the Phaser 4510 which, according to the company, improves on its predecessor’s speed, memory, features and price.
While Xerox is known for the quality of its printers, its pricing often puts those printers out of reach of many small businesses. Todd Smith, a Xerox product marketing manager, says the Phaser 4510 is aimed at companies that generate a heavy print volume and starts to make economic sense for small businesses that print between 1,500 and 2,000 pages per month. With its 200,000-page duty cycle, says Smith, it can reliably handle a print load of 10 to15,000 pages per month.
“Printing 1,500 to 2,000 page per month, the printer becomes much less expensive in terms of its cost per page,” says Smith. “At that level, you’ll spend less than 1.2 cents per page.”
The Xerox Phaser 4510 comes in four configurations with pricing starting at $899. |
The Phaser 4510 comes in four configurations, and all of them are designed to print up to 45 pages per minute and claim a first-page-out speed of eight seconds. The base model, the 4510B sells for $899 and includes the following features:
- 1,200dpi at full rated speed
- 533MHz processor
- 128MB memory
- 1,200 x 1,200 dots-per-inch (DPI) resolution
- Adobe PS3
- USB and parallel interface
- 700-sheet paper capacity
- Auto tray switching
- One-year warranty
Moving up the feature ladder, the 4510N, which costs $999, includes all the features found in the base model plus:
- Ethernet network connection
- PhaserSmart Web-based troubleshooting (more on that later)
The Phaser 4510DT shares the same features as the 4510N, sells for $1,599 and adds these features to the mix:
- Automatic two-sided printing
- An additional 550-sheet paper tray that brings the printer’s total paper capacity to 1,250 sheets
Topping out the line, the 4510DX comes with all of the previously mentioned features, costs $2,299 and adds these features:
- 500-sheet stacker that separates and offsets print jobs
- 40 GB hard drive
Smith says the Phaser 4510 is designed for easy setup and use. Specific examples, he says, include a printer driver that installs in four mouse clicks and Xerox’s PhaserSmart, which is designed to automate troubleshooting and gives you 24/7 access to Xerox’s online knowledge base system.
The printer includes other ease-of-use and security features such as:
Printing Scout
A tool that installs with your Windows printer driver, PrintingScout automatically checks the printer status when you send a print job. If the printer can’t print, PrintingScout tells you by automatically displaying a message on your computer screen.
Secure Print
Prints confidential documents. You can password-protect print jobs and store them on the printer’s hard drive. The jobs print only after you enter your user name, your four-digit password number and job name into the printer’s front panel. Smith says the jobs are automatically deleted from the hard drive after they print.
Proof Print
Prints only one copy of the job so that you can proof it first. To print additional copies, select the job name on the control panel.
Shared Saved Job
Stores the job on the hard drive so you can print it on demand from the control panel – for example, telecommuters can print at home and release the job from the printer once they get to the office. The job is not deleted after printing.
