Gateway Serious About Servers

Its retail stores now closed and much of its business and manufacturing operations streamlined, a more focused Gateway is taking aim at Dell’s PowerEdge and Hewlett-Packard’s ML server lines by offering more capabilities at comparable prices. Gateway today announced the Gateway 9510 Series server, which will begin shipping later this week.

The midrange system touts expandability and new processor technology and is a step up from the company’s entry-level Gateway 9210. The tower system is aimed at businesses with 100 or more employees, according to Tim Diefenthaler, Gateway’s senior director, server product marketing.

The 9510 features dual 64-bit Intel Xeon processors. Originally codenamed Nocona, the EM64T CPU technology is designed to offer the capability to run both existing 32-bit applications as well as 64-bit applications as they become available. The new Intel processors are coupled with an 800 MHz system bus and Hyper Threading technology, which is designed to help businesses adjust to spikes in workloads.

The 9510 is designed to work as a file and print server as well as handle more demanding e-mail and database applications. The new tower server replaces the 960 and 980.

Built to offer flexibility in terms of internal storage, the 9510 supports up to 10 SCSI hard drives with up to 3TB of internal storage or up to six SATA hard drives with up to 2.4TB of internal storage. The 9510 features redundant hot-plug power supplies and fans.

“Businesses need an easy-to-manage computing platform that will scale as they grow,” said Tim Diefenthaler, senior director of server product marketing at Gateway. “Gateway’s new servers offer availability features such as RAID 5 and hot swap redundant fans. Coupled with the latest Xeon processing power the systems scale from Web servers up to demanding transactional database applications, ultimately delivering exceptional value to customers,” Diefenthaler said.

The Gateway 9510 pricing starting at $1,199.

Gateway also announced two rack-mountable servers:

The Gateway 9315 Series features a 1U space-saving design,
allowing it to be placed in any standard rack. Pricing starts at $999.

The 9515 Series is designed for businesses where space is at a premium. The 2U server, according to Gateway, is ideally suited for use as a file or print server, a basic application server or e-mail server The 9515 Series replaces the Gateway 975 Series server and is priced starting at $1,499.
