Multi-Bargain

Just what the world needs: “another” multifunction device. On the surface, the Samsung MSYS 4700 resembles most multifunction machines in its class with printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. But given its price/quality/performance mix, the 4700 does standout in a crowded marketplace.

The printer offers three modes: draft, normal, and high resolution. At 1200 dpi, the output is stunning with smooth type and rich colors. The normal 600 dpi mode is more than adequate for everyday use. Printing speeds are 8 ppm for black & white and 3 ppm for color, in draft mode. In high-resolution mode, the 4700 prints at speeds you’d expect for a low-priced ink jet unit laying down lots of dots per inch.

The copier has an optical resolution of 300 by 300 dpi, with the ability to reduce and enlarge from 25 to 200 percent. The scanner has a resolution of 300 by 300 dpi and includes an automatic document feeder with a capacity of 30 sheets. The fax not only offers resolutions modes of standard and fine (200 by 100 dpi and 200 by 200, respectively), but boasts a “super” setting of 300 by 300 dpi.

The Samsung SmarThru 2 software is simple, but functional. You can perform several tasks with minimal effort, including scanning to file, fax, or email, and copying or using OCR. One interesting feature of SmarThru is the Message center, which serves as a full email client. You can also use it to receive and store faxes.

On the downside, the manual is sparse and there is no color copying function. Overall, the Samsung MSYS 4700 is an excellent value and a solid performer.
