Have Scanner, Will Travel

USB Travelscan PRO
Rating 92

The TravelScan Pro, allows users to scan information (such as hotel receipts) as a trip progresses, and then bill clients or submit expense reports in near real-time. Simply scan in the paper and fax or e-mail the output.

The 36-bit TravelScan offers a hardware resolution of 300dpi and 9600dpi interpolated. It weighs in at a scant 12 ounces and measures just 11-inches long by 1.9-inches wide and 1.5-inches thick. Since the unit draws power from a notebook, users don’t have to lug around a separate transformer. Installation was easy and it went without a hitch – just be sure to follow the well-written documentation.

While the TravelScan Pro won’t win the Indy 500, its speed is adequate for mobile scanning and faxing. More important, the quality of the scans is generally good; Watch the feed mechanism, especially with coated paper. Since your hand functions as the sheet feeder, you have to make sure the paper doesn’t buckle as it enters the scanner.

The software included ScanSoft’s Pagis Pro, an intuitive suite of imaging tools, and Version 8 of the well-respected Textbridge OCR package.

The pre-sets cover most of the common situations you’ll encounter (magazine articles, photos, forms, etc.).

All in all, the TravelScan Pro is one for the road!
