Iomega Tops Off Storage Line with Terabyte-Plus Servers

The amount of data that small businesses need to store nearly doubles every year, placing a strain on growing companies’ resources and budgets. That factoid underscores Iomega’s announcement today of its latest network attached storage server, the StorCenter Pro NAS 450r Series.

The 450r caps the higher end of Iomega’s network-attached storage line, which includes the StorCenter Pro NAS 150d, 200d, 250d, 300r, 400e and 400r Series servers. According to Tom Kampfer, the company’s president and COO, Iomega serves the needs of small businesses as they grow.

“We offer storage products for everyone – from SMBs with one or two employees all the way up to companies with more than 100 employees,” said Kampfer.

The StorCenter Pro NAS 450r is a 1U rack-mount box that comes in two flavors: 1 terabyte and 2 terabyte configurations. Both models support four hot-swappable, 7,200 RPM SATA II drives (four 250GB drives for 1T and four 500GB drives for 2T). When servers feature hot-swappable drives, it means that should any one drive fail, you can replace the damaged drive without shutting down the server and disrupting your company’s productivity.

The 450r features dual-core Intel Xeon processors, dual Gigabit Ethernet connections, error-correcting memory, an Ultra 320 SCSI connection for archival backup and hardware-based RAID 0 (striping), 1 (mirroring) and 5 (striping with parity), which Iomega says gives SMBs more flexible options to configure the server for performance or data protection. Kampfer said these components give the 450r “excellent performance and energy efficiency.”

On the software side, the 450r includes Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 – with unlimited client access licenses (CALs), Touch-Free backup software for client PCs, Computer Associates eTrust Antivirus and BrightSTor ARCserve OEM edition with disaster recovery; and a five-license version of EMC Retrospect Express for automatic client-level backup and scheduled backup of desktops, laptops and workstations.

Iomega says its StorCenter Pro NAS 450r offers SMBs with hefty storage needs enterprise-level performance and reliability.

The 450r also supports Microsoft Active Directory Services and Distributed File System for network integration.

Kampfer said the storage box is designed to offer SMBs enterprise-level, yet cost-effective storage for a variety of tasks such as file sharing, server consolidation and managing data files for applications such as Exchange and databases. “Storing the data on the StorCenter Pro NAS 450r takes the load off of your other servers and lets them run the actual applications much more efficiently,” said Kampfer.

In addition to its storage capabilities, the 450r is also a print server. It comes with Microsoft Windows print server software, which lets the 450r manage up to five networked printers. An upgrade option provides support for an unlimited number of network printers.

Iomega expects the StorCenter Pro NAS 450r Series — both the 1T and the 2T version – to be available in May. The 1T version will sell for $3,999 and the 2T version will cost $4,999. Kampfer said that a 4T version should be out later in the year once 1T hard drives become readily available. He said that pricing for that model is not yet available.
