Pioneer Electronics (USA) announced that it will begin producing its first cable modem-based home gateway device.

According to the company, its home-networking gateway combines a DOCSIS 1.0/1.1 compliant modem, router-gateway, and wireless base station (802.11b compliant) in one device. The unit should also allow for wired networking over traditional Ethernet connection to a PC.

The gateway device will be designed to maintain data privacy with 40/128 bit WEP encryption and triple DES. The company claims that its gateway will be an ideal platform to bridge devices on the home network, including PCs, printers, set-top boxes and cameras, to the external networks and their services, such as streaming video, gaming, shopping, VOD, and other broadband applications. Pioneer will begin shipments of the gateway in the second half of 2002.
