Sprint's First Megapixel Camera Phone

By James Alan Miller | Posted July 26, 2004
Cell phones with built-in digital cameras do a fine job snapping quick shots to share with friends and family, but if you need quality images for work, a stand-alone digital camera's been your only option -- until now. Sprint's just announced its new Vision Picture Phone PM-8920, the first one-megapixel camera phone in the United States.

The 1.3-megapixel camera in the PM-8920 lets you take pictures up to 1280 x 960 pixels in size. It also includes a built-in flash, self-timer and up to 8x digital zoom capability. In addition, the PM-8920 is Sprint's first phone that features interior and exterior screens that support 260 thousand colors.

Customizable camera and Picture Mail options include four different shutter sound options and the capability to record your own sounds. You also get a choice of 40 different frames to use when emailing images. In addition, Sprint's multimedia messaging service lets you record a 10-second voice clip with a picture message.

The camera phone's Macro Switch lets you take close-range pictures, and you can share and upload an unlimited number of pictures to a personal online photo album. You can even use a picture as a photo I.D. for callers. The handset measures a compact 3.4 x 1.85 x.9 inches and weighs a light 3.88 ounces. The phone comes with 64MB of RAM and 128MB of ROM.

Sprint sells the PM-8920 for $150 after rebates. It lists for $300.
