Xerox Intros Affordable Color Laser and MFP

Inkjet printer manufacturers have learned they can’t charge a premium over $50 or so to change a single-function printer into a multifunction device by adding copying and scanning capabilities to printers. Color laser manufacturers have traditionally charged a lot more to go the all-in-one route, but now Xerox Corp. has introduced a color laser printer/scanner/copier/fax priced at a surprisingly sane $599.

The Xerox Phaser 6128MFP prints up to 16 pages per minute in black and white and 12 ppm in color, combining 600 by 600 dpi resolution with Emulsion Aggregate High Grade toner with smaller, more consistent toner particles for sharper image quality. A simple-to-navigate front panel display steers users through features such as scan to e-mail and LAN fax directly from the PC; a 250-sheet paper tray, 35-sheet automatic document feeder, and Ethernet and USB 2.0 ports are standard.

You still want a single-purpose printer? Xerox’s new Phaser 6280 offers color print speeds up to 26 ppm (31 ppm black) and a first-page-out time as fast as 10 seconds, as well as true Adobe PostScript3 and PCL emulations and Pantone color-approved simulations with 600 by 600 by 4 dpi that delivers 16 shades of color per pixel. Paper capacity is expandable up to 950 sheets. The 6280 starts at $549 (before an introductory $100 rebate); a duplex model is $100 more.
