Today Iomega announces a Firewire version of its REV drive, targeted directly at Mac users. The two-toned white and gray REV 35GB 1394/Firewire drive matches other Mac peripherals and provides portable storage suitable for large file transfers and data backup.

The native Firewire drive uses 35GB cartridge disks and provides up to 25MB per second transfer speeds. Iomega promotes the drive as an alternative to tape backup, providing the best of two worlds &#151 the speed of a hard drive and the portability of tape.

“Iomega keeps the sensitive drive heads and electronics on the drive, not the cartridges,” says Bob Lutz, general manager of emerging technology at Iomega. “The cartridges are rugged. You can drop them and not worry about damaging your data.”

The REV drive is bus-powered, which means you don’t need a power adapter as long as you use a six-pin Firewire cable when connecting the drive to your computer. Iomega provides a Dantz Retrospect Express software bundle to take care of scheduled or automatic file backup, full system backup and recovery, and software-based compression (each cartridge can hold 90 GB of compressed data). The bundle also includes Iomega Automatic Backup Pro and Symantec Norton Ghost for REV software for PC users.

The package includes a power adapter for daisy chaining Firewire drives or for making a four-pin Firewire connection.
