Alcatel-Lucent Revamps OpenTouch Suite for BYOD and Social

As dial pads give way to touch-screens in consumer and professional-technology markets, business communications specialist Alcatel-Lucent sets out to make sure small businesses don’t get left behind.

The company recently updated its OpenTouch Suite, a small and midsized business (SMB) communications product portfolio, to address the growing demand for products that support the wave of smartphones and tablets engulfing small businesses.

Updates include products like the new IP DECT Access Point that bridge Alcatel-Lucent’s advanced telephony and voice communications features like Universal Directory Access with bring-your-own-device (BYOD) initiatives. On the mobile device front, the company’s My IC Mobile apps for iPhone and Android connect mobile employees to their companies’ voice platform.

Social Media Meets Business Communication

Business communications are undergoing a big transformation, says Katerina Cerny, SMB product marketing manager for Alcatel-Lucent. And social media is at the heart of it.

“SMBs must be part of the Web conversation,” states Cerny. In some countries, like Germany and some Nordic nations, SMBs have enthusiastically embraced social media, she reports.

Cerny notes that reaching people through social media is easy and affordable compared to traditional methods. Many small businesses are discovering that “it’s a costless way to make some noise,” she adds.

To serve this market, her company rolled out My IC Social Networks, an Outlook-compatible software platform that opens up the lines of communications with both internal and external contacts on Facebook, Skype, Yahoo and MSN. My IC Social Networks sync with Outlook directories and presence capabilities.

New software called My IC Web for Office, offers browser-based call monitoring and management. Two new offerings, My IC Phone video endpoint and LifeSize Unity 50 let businesses seamlessly launch video conferencing sessions on their Alcatel-Lucent setups.

Other enhancements to the OpenTouch Suite include Smart Call Routing, which allows small businesses to deliver faster, more prompt customer service and “provides the SMB the feel of a large business with a welcome attendant,” says the company. Behind the scenes, OmniPCX Office R9.0 supports up to 120 SIP phones, including an expanded portfolio of desk phones that the company is rolling out to serve the entry-level market.

Alcatel-Lucent’s updated OpenTouch Suite for SMBs is available now.
