Hardware News: Print, Talk and Store

The end of the year may be a mere 31 days away, but there’s no end in site to new products aimed at SMBs. The latest items to cross our editorial desk address three key small business needs — printing, communication and data storage. If new hardware is on your business wish list, take a look at what HP, Samsung and Iomega have to offer.

HP LaserJet P2015 Printer Series
HP recently announced a new series of monochrome printers designed for small businesses with a need for output speed. This monochrome laser printer series consists of four models that share a print speed of up to 27 pages per minute. The HP LaserJet P2015 base printer anchors the series and sells for $349. The LaserJet P2015d adds duplex (double-sided) printing and costs $399.

Moving up the line gets you duplex printing and network capability in the LaserJet P2015dn Printer for $499. The high-end of the series, the LaserJet P2015x, includes two-sided printing, networking and an optional 250-sheet paper tray. It sells for $599.

The printers also share a recommended monthly page volume ranging between 740 to 3000 pages and a monthly duty cycle of Up to 15,000 pages.

Sprint Power Vision M610 by Samsung
Business owners who spend a lot of time on the road but need to stay connected to the office and to clients may find what they’re looking for in the Sprint Poser Vision M610. Built by Samsung and sold through Sprint, the M610 measures a mere 3.98- x 2.05- x 0.47-inches and weighs 3.28 ounces.

At less than one-half inch in height, the M610 is, according to Samsung and Sprint, the thinnest clamshell-style wireless phone available. The phone’s features include a 2.0 megapixel camera, a 240 × 320 display, stereo Bluetooth, speakerphone, advanced voice recognition and an external MicroSD memory card slot.

The M610 accesses the Internet using Sprint’s Power Vision EVDO network at what the company describes as “broadband-like speed.” Sprint also provides exclusive content including live TV and on-demand video and audio through Sprint TV. Customers can also use the M610 to search for and download music from the Sprint Music Store, watch sports highlights via NFL Mobile or stream full-length films from Sprint Movies.

The M610 is currently available online and will be sold in retail channels starting Dec. 3. The phone sells for $329.99 or $179.99 when purchased with a two-year service contract.

Iomega StorCenter Pro NAS 250d Servers
If you’re having trouble keeping up with the data your business generates, Iomega wants your attention. It recently announced the latest generation of StorCenter Pro network attached storage servers, which, says Iomega, are designed to store and protect data in an easy-to-use, cost- and time-efficient way.

The new 250d line features four desktop-form-factor models with capacities ranging from 500GB to 1.5TB, and all of them include Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 operating system that’s been optimized for file and print services — a first, according to Iomega. The entire line also comes with SATA-II hot-swappable hard drives, which means you can remove and replace a hard drive without having to shut down (and lose access to) the server.

The 500GB version of the StorCenter Pro NAS 250d includes a built-in Iomega Rev 70 drive for server back-up and restoration duty. Here’s how the line breaks down in terms of price, number of drives, RAID capability and print and file services support:

StorCenter Pro NAS 250d 500GB. With REV 70 — $1,999, without — $1,399. Two 7,200-rpm 250GB drives with support for RAID 0 (striping) and RAID 1 (mirroring). File services include Active Directory, Encrypting File System (EFS), Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) and SRM.

StorCenter Pro NAS 250d 750GB. Available starting Dec 30 for $2,799. Three 7,200-rpm 250GB drives with support for RAID 5 (striping plus parity), RAID 0 and RAID 1. It also includes dual Gigabit Ethernet connections and an external Ultra 320 SCSI connection. File services include Active Directory, Encrypting File System (EFS), Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) and SRM plus Distributed Files System (DFS-N and DFS-R), and File Server Resource Manager (FSRM).

StorCenter Pro NAS 250d 1.5TB. Available starting Dec 30 for $3,999. Three 7,200-rpm 500GB hard drives with support for RAID 5 (striping plus parity), RAID 0 and RAID 1.
